Matriculation explained

A step-by-step guide to matriculation, the process by which you are formally admitted as a student to the University of Edinburgh.

By matriculating, you are confirming your acceptance of the University’s regulations set out in the ‘Sponsio Academica’, or oath, including your agreement to pay student academic fees and other related costs. You can read about Edinburgh's ‘Sponsio Academica’ at the link below:

Matriculation also gives you access to the University’s services and facilities.

How to matriculate

You will need to complete the steps below in the matriculation process:

1. Register online and confirm funding or student academic fee payment

All campus-based and online distance-learning students must first register online with the University. Completing this form will include paying academic fees in full, setting up an instalment plan, or providing confirmation of sponsorship, grant, international educational loan, or UK government funding, and this is a required step of the registration form.

You will find further guidance on the registration form at the link below:

Visa requirements and immigration advice for campus-based students

Everyone who is not a UK or Irish citizen must provide evidence of their right to study – this is known as International Check-in. This involves uploading an image of your passport and visa with entry stamp and then attending an in-person check at the University.

The University has a legal obligation to make sure that all students have suitable immigration permission to study in the United Kingdom.

Find out exactly what you need to do for International Check-in here:

More information about UK visa and immigration requirements, including Tier 4 General student visa and sponsorship requirements, is available on the University’s Student Immigration Service website here:

2. Confirm you have started your studies

Around the start date of your programme, your School will contact you with details about how they will confirm you have started your studies and ensure that you successfully join your programme. You must respond to any communication you receive about confirming attendance.

The process for confirming your attendance varies by School and may include meeting with your Student Support Team, Student Adviser or research supervisor, logging into a virtual learning environment or responding to an email.

No action is required from you until your School lets you know how to confirm you have started your studies.

You must confirm your attendance when you begin your studies with us, and then again at the start of each new academic session or year of study.

3. Fulfil admission criteria

A few programmes have additional requirements that must be completed at the start of your programme. If this is applicable to you, your school or college will email you to let you know about any additional programme-specific admissions criteria, such as organising disclosure checks.
