Registration application accessibility statement

This accessibility statement applies to all pages of the Registration application developed for the students at University of Edinburgh.

The Registration application is created and maintained by the Student Systems and Administration group at the University of Edinburgh.  We want as many students to be able to use this application. This means that you should be able to:

  • Access all functionality through a keyboard interface without requiring specific timings for individual keystrokes,
  • Access all functionality using a screen reader easily (including using Internet Explorer),
  • Zoom the application and its contents up to 200% using browser controls without the text spilling out of the screen,
  • Customize font colours, types and background colours using browser settings to improve readability,
  • Navigate the application sequentially using screen readers and keyboard interfaces such that the sequence preserves the meaning and operability of the application,
  • Access the entire application without relying on audio-only or video-only media, and
  • Access the entire application without experiencing anything that flashes for more than three times in any one second period.

We have also made the text within the application as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible is this application

We know that some parts of this site are not fully accessible and have a plan for improving these

  • On certain pages such as those confirming programme and personal details there are alert messages for missing information that appear at the bottom of all questions only,
  • While the colour contrasts meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 standard (AA level) some are more difficult to see,
  • The additional authentication required to access this application may require additional help for some users,
  • Spellcheck is not enabled for smaller text boxes such as those capturing email addresses and phone numbers,
  • All links in the system open in a new tab and there may not be an indication to the user that this is the case.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The Student Systems and Administration group at the University of Edinburgh is committed to making its application accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This Registration application is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA standard due to the non-accessible content listed below.

Non-accessible content

  • Alert messages provided to users within the application allow error prevention but these messages are provided at the bottom of all questions on certain pages as opposed to being proximal to the missing form fields (WCAG Criterion 3.3.5).
  • All links within the application open in new tabs instead of opening within the same window. This allows users to remain within the same context. However, users are not provided any help indicating that the link opened in a new tab when it is clicked (WCAG Criterion 3.3.5).
  • There are instructions and content within the application that require reading ability more advanced than the lower secondary education level (as defined by the International Standard Classification of Education [UNESCO]) that are not supplemented with additional definitions or alternative versions (WCAG Criterion 3.1.5).
  • Certain instructions within the application have a colour contrast ratio that meets the WCAG 2.1 AA standard but is still difficult to see since it does not meet the WCAG 2.1 AAA standard (WCAG Criterion 1.4.3).

What we are doing to improve accessibility

In an effort to improve the accessibility of the Registration application we aim to address the following issues by mid-2022 subject to resources. In the meantime, we will continue to make reasonable adjustments to ensure no user is disadvantaged until we are able to resolve the issues.

  • Provide context-specific help to alert users when form fields are missing information and need to be completed (WCAG Criterion 3.3.5).
  • Help users by communicating that links will open in new tabs when clicked (WCAG Criterion 3.3.5).
  • Improving the colour contrast between text and its background for easier reading to meet the WCAG 2.1 AAA levels (WCAG Criterion 1.4.3).
  • Providing additional definitions and alternative versions of content that requires reading ability more advanced than the lower secondary education level (as defined by the International Standard Classification of Education [UNESCO]) (WCAG Criterion 3.1.5).

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This system was last tested by the University of Edinburgh’s Deputy Disability Information Officer on May 10, 2020 by sampling the majority of pages across the website. The Registration application was tested on a personal computer(PC) using the bowser Internet Explorer 11 as this is the bowser most commonly used by disabled users since accessibility features and assistive technology are most compatible with IE 11 (as shown by the Government Assistive Technology Survey).

The Registration application was tested for:

•          Spellcheck functionality

•          Data validation

•          Scaling using different resolutions

•          Options to customise the interface (magnification, font and background colour changing etc.)

•          Keyboard navigation

•          Warning of links opening in a new tab or window

•          Information conveyed in colour or sound only

•          Flashing or scrolling text

•          Operability if Javascript is disabled

•          Use with screen reading software (JAWS)

•          TextHelp Read and Write (assistive software)

•          Zoomtext (assistive software)

•          Time limits

•          Access to specialist help

Testing was done manually instead of using automated web testing tools since the Registration application requires user authentication.
