A guide to course enrolment ‘Study Modes’ and when to use them.

Important Note –  UG students taking ‘up to and including’ 80 credits across the full academic year will have their programme Mode of Study as Part-Time. Further guidance is available below:

COURSE STUDY MODE WHEN TO USE IMPLICATIONS FOR TIMETABLING
Assessment (A) Use for coursework-only assessment where the student does not need to attend classes.

Will not appear in student’s class timetable.

No examination.
Class Only (C) When a student wishes to audit a class.

Student will see this in their class timetable.

No examination.
Classes & Assessment excl. centrally arranged exam (CA) Use where a student needs to attend the class, and only needs to complete coursework assessment.

Student will see this in their class timetable.

No examination.
Classes & Assessment incl. centrally arranged exam (CE) Use where a student needs to attend the class and complete coursework and/or a centrally arranged examination.

Student will see this in their class timetable.

Student is included in centrally arranged exam reports.
Exam Only (centrally arranged) (E) Use when a student needs to complete the examination but does not need to attend classes.

Will not appear in student’s class timetable.

Student is included in centrally arranged exam reports.

Distance Learning (D) Attached to ICL/Part-time intermittent study programmes.

Student will see this in their class timetable.

Student is included in centrally arranged exam reports.

Distance Learning (Non-credit) (DN) Attached to ICL/Part-time intermittent study programmes, and is equivalent to Class Only.

Student will see this in their class timetable.

No examination.

Please note that where the Mode of Study is Full-time and where ‘E’ Exam only course(s) are also being taken (alongside other courses) then the tuition fee charged is at the appropriate Full-time rate according to the level of programme of study.

Similarly, where the Mode of Study is Part-time and where ‘E’ Exam only course(s) are also being taken (along with other courses) then the tuition fee charged is at the appropriate Part-time rate according to the level of programme of study.
