Preparing your portfolio

What should the ‘context’ images demonstrate?

Individual briefs for each undergraduate degree requiring a portfolio can be found on the respective degree finder pages linked here:
Portfolio preparation and requirements: user guide

These include information about specific contextual information relevant to the degree you are applying for.

In general terms, context refers to demonstrate your influences. These may be images of work or objects that have inspired or influenced your work, e.g.

  • People working in the same medium or for the same audience, now or in the past
  • People interested in the same subject or theme, now or in the past
  • Natural or man-made phenomena, objects, places or events that have inspired or provoked a response.

Can I submit my portfolio in another format?

All portfolios must be submitted through the portfolio system and we are unable to accept portfolios in any other formats.

Can I provide a personal statement as part of my portfolio?

We received your personal statement with your UCAS application, and a further statement is not required.

Can I submit extra files or an additional statement as part of my portfolio?

No extra work will be accepted. Only what is specified within the Portfolio preparation and requirements: user guide will be accepted and all work must be uploaded through the portfolio tool.

How can I edit my images so they are ready to upload?

Common image editors applicants use include Photoshop, Paint and Preview.

We are unable to provide support on how to use these tools, but you should be able to find assistance online if you have any questions.

Can I email in my portfolio?

No, all work must be uploaded via the portfolio tool.

Can I change my portfolio after I have submitted it?

Once you have submitted your portfolio, you cannot make any changes to it. We recommend carrying out your uploads and saving your progress until such a time you are completely sure about what you are submitting.

Please ensure though that you do submit your portfolio before the deadline, because portfolios that have been uploaded but not submitted will not reach the assessors once the deadline has passed.

Can I see examples of previous portfolios?

Example portfolios are linked on the degree finder page for your programme. Please do not copy these examples.

Can I have more specific advice about what work to include?

We advise you to use the guidance we provide as applicants should make their own assessment of how they wish to portray their work and should aim to ensure that their work matches the brief as closely as possible.

The assessors are looking to see how an applicant responds to the brief as part of the assessment criteria is how you choose to present your work in line with it.

You can find this guidance on the degree finder page for your programme.

Does my portfolio have to be in the order of the four assessment criteria?

No. You choose how you collate your portfolio but thinking about the four assessment criteria as phases or elements of a project can be a useful narrative for communicating your work. For instance, if you approach projects by initially conducting visual and/or contextual research, then develop your ideas through experimentation from which you select and resolve your ideas into final work(s) then expressing it in this order can help the assessors understand your process more accurately.

Can I reference other artist’s work/use copyrighted material?

Yes. Be clear when you are referencing another artist to avoid confusion about what is your work and what is research material produced by others.

For the BA Film and TV portfolio, please note that if you do wish to use content (e.g. music) that is copyrighted, it is at your own risk.

If YouTube/Vimeo decide to remove your film due to copyright issues, then we will not be able to assess your portfolio and you will not have the opportunity to submit it again.

How many projects am I supposed to include?

Including between 4-5 projects that cover each project from initial visual and contextual research through to their conclusion is ideal. You can include more or less projects than this number, this will be dependent on the how you currently work. Quality over quantity of projects is important.

Can I include project briefs on my pages?

Yes but consider including the project brief in a condensed and succinct manner. Don't reproduce a full A4 page of text within a slide; instead, try to summarise or paraphrase your project brief into a title and a couple of lines that describe or further contextualise its aims.
