View guidance on adding and removing elective courses within your Degree Programme Table (DPTS), including adding a block of courses, adding a course selection rule, defining the elective credit range, and identifying and selecting course collections for display. Adding a block When you need to display a choice of Elective courses within your DPT you can use the 'Add block' facility to build the overarching rules of the choice. For example, if the student can choose 40 credits from either of 2 sets of courses. The example below, demonstrates an instance where a block in inserted to display an elective choice, where the student can select a 20 credit course, choosing between single course, or a collection of courses. Click on the '+Add block' button on the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Image This will add a new block beneath the 'Elective courses' section of your DPT. Image Click on the 'Set group limits' button to set out the block credit range. This will display the 'Edit group limits' window. Image In this example our student can only select courses worth 20 credits, so we need to key 20 in each field available, but if there is a range, i.e. the student can choose courses between 10 and 30 credits, then a 10 and 30 would be keyed in the fields. Click on the 'Save group limits' button to commit the credit range for the elective courses. The new block will now display with the credits you have provided. Image Adding a rule Now you need to add the courses you want students to choose from. You can do this by clicking on the 'Insert' button within the block. This will display the insert options for you to choose from. Image Selecting the 'Insert rule here' option allows you to add single or a collection of courses into the block for the student to choose from. Selecting the 'Insert block here' option allows you to insert a new block within your existing block. An example of why you would need to do this can be seen in an instance where you want your students to select 40 credits from a courses within the overall block, but they can select 20 credits from course collections A or B, and 20 credits from course collections C or D. In this example our block is stipulating that 20 credits should be selected from course collection A or B, so there's no need for us to add this extra level of complexity. Click on the 'Insert rule here' option. This will display a new 'rule' within our block. Image Click on the 'Edit' drop down button to display the options available. Image Selecting the 'Set rule definition' option will allow you to identify and select the courses you want to be displayed. Selecting the 'Add help text' will allow you to key in some free text guidance for the student to aid them in choosing their elective courses. Click on the 'Set rule definition' option. Image This will display the 'Change rule definition' window. Within this window you can define the credit limits of the courses that can be selected from this collection, select the course(s) you want to display and stipulate the courses as having a 'Core rule'. Designating a course as 'core rule' allows you to select a option that stipulates the student must pass the course(s), with further options to state a 50% pass mark, and/or on the first sitting. More informatrion on 'Core course rules' can be seen via the link provided at the bottom of the page. Please note you should always leave the 'Period student must satisfy this rule in' as 'Any period course are available' to avoid any error in selecting a period that is not compatible with the period the course has been created to be delivered within. In this example we are choosing to offer a single course worth 20 credits for our students to choose from, so we will key in 20 credits within the 'Credit limits' fields, and then select the 'Individual course' tab. You can key in the course title or code within the 'Course' field within this screen to select the course to be displayed as an elective choice. Click on the 'Save changes' button when you have keyed in the correct course. This will display the course within your block. Image In this example we want to insert another course collection for our students to choose from, so we need to click on the '+Insert' button below our recently added elective course, and select the 'Insert new rule' option. This will insert a new empty collection box within our block. Image Select the 'Set rule definition' option from the 'Edit' button within our new course collection. In this example we want our students to choose from a collection of courses, and more specifically, courses collected by subject, so once we have keyed in 20 credits within the 'Course limits' fields, we should click on the 'Courses in a subject' field. Image Key on the subject collection title or code within the 'Subject area' field and then select the appropriate SCQF level to identify the appropriate collection of courses. Click on the 'Save changes' button. This will display the collection of courses within your elective course block. Image As the collection has too many courses to display on screen to choose from, a link is provided for the student to click on to view the collection. All that is left is to select the appropriate Operand from the drop down box between your two elective course groups. In this example, we want to select 'Or', to complete the elective choice parameters i.e. select a course worth 20 credits fro, either A or B. If there are no validation errors for our updated DPT we can go ahead and click on the 'Save changes' button. Removing a block or rule You can remove a block or rule from your DPT structure easily using the trach can button at the top right hand corner of the block, or by selecting the 'Remove rule' option within the 'Edit' drop down button. Image Please note if you are removing a courses from a DPT either within a block or rule for a DPT that has student enrolled on these courses, you will be reminded of this before you can confirm the removal of the course(s). Click on the 'Save changes' button to commit the changes.
