Opportunities in the School of GeoSciences

The University will offer PhD scholarships for students starting their PhD research at the University in the 2026-2027 academic session.

The Energy Transition Centre for Masters’ Training (CMT) and the Geoscience Energy Society of Great Britain (GESGB) will be jointly funding 12 Bursaries, each valued at £6000 per annum, for students who will be enrolled in an energy geoscience-related MSc course for the forthcoming academic year 2026/2027.

The principal objective of this CMT GESGB initiative is to attract highly talented students into vocational training in energy geoscience; an integral UK “home-grown” part of the energy sector. As we are well aware, the continuing decline in student numbers (UG and PG) in geoscience over the past few years is a concern. The intent of the Bursaries is to make a contribution to reverse this trend.

Funding of the Bursaries is kindly provided equally by GESGB and CMT sponsors; bp, CNOOC and ExxonMobil.

Scholarships are available for prospective students commencing the Climate Change Management MSc programme in 2026/2027. This scholarship is offered in memory of Dr John Douglass Barber, father of an alumna.

The NFU Mutual Charitable Trust is running the scheme to help create a long-standing legacy for the future. The award aims to champion research and innovation for UK agriculture, whilst also supporting promising individuals who are passionate about making a difference to the industry.
The Centenary Award aims to give a number of selected postgraduate students in agriculture financial assistance for their studies.

The School of Geosciences, with support from the Data Lab Academy and the Scottish Funding Council are offering one fully funded scholarship for the MSc in Geographical Information Science for the 2025-26 academic session. The successful recipient must undertake specified courses in spatial data science as part of their Masters degree.
