Classics scholarships and prizes

Thirteen awards are available in Classics.

Baldwin Brown Travelling Scholarship (Classical Archaeology)

Several scholarships are awarded each year on the recommendation of the department of Classics.

Butcher Memorial Prize in Greek

A prize is awarded annually to the best students in beginners Greek. 

David Dundas Memorial Fund

The Fund is applied in the first instance for the assistance of Honours students who intend to visit Italy or any other destination for the purposes related to the promotion of Latin.

Should circumstances permit, the fund may additionally be applied, to aid the publication of researches on Latin Literature or Roman History.

C S Edgar Prize

A prize is awarded annually by the Head of Subject Area on the basis of class exercises in the Greek Intermediate Honours Class.

A prize is also awarded annually by the Head of Subject Area on the basis of class exercises in the Greek Honours Class

Hardie Prize for Latin Prose Composition

A prize is awarded annually to a student in the Honours Latin class for Latin prose composition.

If no candidate of sufficient merit competes for the Latin verse composition prize, prizes may be awarded for excellence in an English essay on a prescribed classical subject.

Hardie Prize for English Essay

A prize is awarded annually to an honours student for an excellent essay or dissertation in one of the disciplines of Classics.

Howell Giles Ancient History Prize

A prize is awarded annually for an excellent result in Ancient History.

Chilton Classical Archaeology Prize

A prize is awarded annually for an excellent result in Classical Archaeology.

Horsliehill-Scott Bursaries

Awarded to two students each year entering their third year for an MA degree on the basis of class work in one of the fields in Classics. 

Margaret Stobie Keith Prize

A prize is awarded annually to a candidate or candidates for the degree of MA with Honours or MA (General Honours) whose final degree examination includes papers in Latin or Greek and who in that examination produces work of distinction in the field of Ancient History, Ancient Philosophy or Ancient Religion.

Imke Schutte Memorial Prize

A prize is awarded annually for distinguished course essay work in second year Ancient History.

Scott and Dunbar Prize

A prize is awarded annually to the most deserving and learned student in the Greek classes.

Pinkerton Prize

A prize is awarded annual to the student with the best performance in Latin finals by a former member of the Beginners’ class.
