Research Councils offer awards to Master's programme and/or MPhil/PhD students in most of the University's Schools.

The University of Edinburgh is one of 50 leading Higher Education Institutions to receive a Doctoral Landscape Award from the AHRC to help underpin the strength and stability of the arts and humanities research environment.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) covers a wide range of disciplines.

EPSRC is the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing more than £800 million a year in a broad range of subjects.

The University of Edinburgh is part of a consortium of Universities in Scotland which have been awarded funding from the Economics & Social Research Council (ESRC) to support postgraduate studentships and training in the Social Sciences in Scotland.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) offers studentships within biomedical or related biological subjects.

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) offers research awards in a number of subject areas.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) supports research in particle physics, astronomy, astrophysics, nuclear physics, and solar system science.
