Award

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology invites applications from outstanding candidates for the Justin Arbuthnott PhD Scholarship for 2024-2025 entry.

The award provides an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (for guidance, in 2023-24, this was £18,622 pro-rata for part-time students) for three and a half years, subject to satisfactory progress and tuition fees at the UK or international rate.

Background

This prestigious scholarship aims to promote the better understanding of Ireland and various complex relationships which link Ireland and the UK by facilitating advanced study by PhD students in modern Irish history at the University of Edinburgh.  It is the only PhD scholarship in the UK or Ireland devoted exclusively to the study of modern Irish history.

It is named for Justin Arbuthnott, who was drowned along with three friends one night in July 1989 when their boat capsized off the coast near County Donegal in Ireland.

All four were in their early 20's and were students at the University of Edinburgh where they had first met and become close friends.

Criteria

To be considered for the Justin Arbuthnott PhD Scholarship, you must:

•             Hold a UK 2.1 or first class honours undergraduate degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant field

•             Hold, or successfully achieve before commencing your PhD with us, a relevant masters degree with an overall mark of at least 65%, or its international equivalent.

Eligibility

The award is open to UK, EU and overseas students commencing a PhD degree in the academic year 2024-2025.

Those applying for a distance learning HCA PhD programme, as well as current PhD students, are not eligible to apply for the Justin Arbuthnott PhD Scholarship.

The scholarship panel will consider all high-quality proposals relating to the history of modern Ireland or British-Irish relations.

Applying

Applications are now closed as the 26th March 2024 deadline has passed.

Notification

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications by May 2024.  We reserve the right not to make an award in the event that no suitable applications are received.
