College of Science and Engineering Awards

Awards available in College of Science and Engineering

You need only submit a single application to College Vacation Funding, rather than needing to discern for yourself which awards you may be eligible for.  A guide to the various bequests and some of the eligibility considerations, available here, mainly for transparency and information purposes.

Weir Fund for Field Studies

Weir’s bequest is directed at independent fieldwork and it’s important that applicants both plan and execute their own study programme personally.

Proposed study programmes should involve extra curricular fieldwork in appropriate subjects within the College, and should not be part of any course work.

Where an organised expedition is to be used as a means to gain secure access to a remote location, an applicant’s personal study or curriculum programme must be clearly defined independently from the general objectives of that expedition.

The Fund is open to matriculated undergraduate and postgraduate students and to junior members of staff.

Barnson Bequest

The Bequest was set up for the benefit of undergraduate students of Scottish Nationality who are attending the University to encourage and assist them to broaden their education by attending vacation or other courses preferably of a cultural rather than a technological nature.

This can be at any foreign University and if not applied for this purpose, for the benefit of any other students of Scottish nationality, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, to assist them in fieldwork or other studies whether in the United Kingdom or elsewhere.

The Bequest also favours students suffering financial hardship.

Mackay Greenland Fund

The objective of the fund is to support geological expeditions, during either the Easter or Summer vacation, to Greenland in the spirit of the 1982 University of Edinburgh East Greenland Expedition.

The Fund is available to undergraduates, postgraduates and those who have finished their final year exams, but have not graduated because they are on an expedition to Greenland.

Priority will be given to students in the Geology and Geophysics discipline, but the funds can also be used to fund expeditions to Greenland initiated by other Schools within the University.

If appropriate, the fund can be used to fund joint projects with other Universities.

British Association Travel Fund

The income of this fund provides grants for travelling and other authorised expenses of advanced students (preferably Honours students) in Science and Engineering at the University.

The purpose is to enable them to visit laboratories and museums outside of Edinburgh for advanced study, or localities affording opportunities for the study of material (marine, fresh-water, or terrestrial) of scientific importance, or for such other similar purposes as the College may think fit.

Carnegie Vacation Scholarships

Carnegie Vacation Scholarships aim to encourage undergraduates to develop their independent research skills. The Scheme is open to students enrolled on an undergraduate degree course at an eligible Scottish institution. Awards enable them to learn how to design and manage a research project and prepare for postgraduate study. Students often see their research results published in academic journals or reported in conference presentations. Each year, the Trust organises a poster competition for Vacation Scholarship recipients to allow them to meet and network with each other.

Carnegie Vacation Scholarships are administered by The Carnegie Trust. Further information can be found on The Carnegie Trust website.
