Information on the Lone Parents' Grant and Lone Parents' Childcare Grant for Scottish undergraduate students.

Lone Parents' Grant

The Lone Parent's Grant is an income-assessed grant. The maximum available is £1,305 a year. To be eligible you need to meet one of the following conditions:

  • single and bringing up a child on their own
  • single and legally responsible for a younger sibling

The child or sibling must live with you at least 50% of the time. 

You cannot claim this grant if your child or sibling is:

  • in further or higher education, and they receive a bursary while they study
  • employed
  • studying a non-advanced course for more than 12 hours a week

Lone Parents' Childcare Grant

Students who are eligible for the Lone Parents’ Grant may also qualify for the Lone Parents’ Childcare Grant (LPCG).

The LPCG is available to students bringing up a child or sibling on their own to help towards the cost of registered or formal childcare costs.

The maximum grant is £1,215 each year. How much you receive depends on your childcare costs.

Applying

Applications are now open for 2025/2026 academic year. It will close once funds have been exhausted.

Receiving funds

Awards are paid by BACS (Bankers' Automated Clearing Services).  If you are successful, Finance will process payment to your bank account.  You will be asked to provide these details via a link on the form.   It may take up to 10 working days for funds to reach your bank account.

Fraudulent Applications

If you submit an application or supporting documentation which we then discover to be fraudulent or if we receive any information about fraudulent applications, this will be addressed within regulations 12.4 of the Student Code of Conduct  any funds awarded will need to be paid back in full.  This includes not declaring all access to savings or bank accounts when applying for government funding.
