Information for Student visa holders

You will need to upload a copy of your passport and attend an in-person appointment for International Check-in after you enter the UK.

You should follow the steps below if you have been issued a digital immigration permission.

Steps for International Check-in if you have digital immigration permission

Step 1: Make sure the information on your digital record is correct

Check your personal details, your working conditions and the dates of your Student visa on your UKVI account. Your visa should cover the full duration of your studies, as stated in your CAS, plus an additional wrap-up period.

Please also check you have been granted a Student visa on the correct category and that it is not for a ‘Child Student’.

If you need to update your personal details, you can do this through your UKVI account. If you notice a mistake with your visa information, you should contact UKVI to have it corrected.

Step 2: Complete Registration

Registration is the first step of the matriculation process and confirms your acceptance of the University of Edinburgh's regulations. You must complete this step before international check-in.

As part of your registration, you will be asked to provide basic information, including your term-time address.  As an international student studying in the UK on a Student Visa, you are required to maintain a valid UK residential address for the duration of your studies.  Similarly, as your Student Visa sponsor, we are required to hold accurate records, including your current UK residential address and contact details.  It is important that you provide the University with accurate information regarding your address and contact details, and that you keep this record up to date.

Certain visa applicants who applied before 31 October 2024 may have been issued a new BRP

UKVI stopped issuing new BRPs from 31 October 2024 onwards and provides access to an eVisa online account instead.

However, if you applied for a visa from overseas before 31 October 2024, you may have been issued a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) in addition to having eVisa access.

If you were issued a BRP (shortened to 31.12.2024), you would still need to collect your new BRP, if delivered to the University. You must collect and hold onto all immigration documents as these are important records.

You should ensure your eVisa account shows the correct visa details and ensure your current passport is linked as ID document. You should still upload a photo of your passport to MyEd, and complete your International Check-in in person.
