Step 2: Start your visa application and confirm your identity

At the start of your visa application, you will need to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan your passport and to take a photo of yourself.

Check if you can use the ID Check app 

If you are an EU, EEA, or Swiss national and you have a valid passport with a biometric chip, you can use the free UK Immigration: ID Check app to confirm your identity and upload your documents as part of your application. 

When you start your visa application, you will be asked some questions to confirm that you can use the app.  

If you can, you will be asked to download the app and upload: 

  • a photo of your passport  
  • a photo of yourself  

You will then complete the rest of your application online. You do not use the app to complete your application. 

If you cannot use the ID Check app 

If you cannot use the UK Immigration: ID Check app, you will need to follow the process for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals and attend an appointment at a visa application centre in person.

You will need to have your passport scanned and your identity confirmed in person.

Applications outside the UK: Between September 2024 and January 2025, the commercial partner will change from TLScontact to VFS Global in some locations in:

  • Africa
  • Europe
  • the Middle East
  • Central Asia

Other parts of the world are not affected by this provider change.
