Self-funded (your own or parent's money)

If you are a self-funded student, you can use your own money, or money from a parent, legal guardian, or in very limited cases a partner. There are extra document requirements if you aren't using your own money.

How to provide financial evidence as a self-funded student

  1. Calculate the amount of money you'll need to show for your visa application.
  2. Move this amount into one or more accounts, in your name (or the name of your parents/guardian or partner. There are additional document requirements if the account isn't in your name)
  3. Hold the required full amount of money in the account(s) for 28 continuous days.
  4. Get a bank statement (or other official financial document(s)) to show that the money was in the account(s) for 28 continuous days. Please note it is necessary for the funds to have been held for a minimum of 28 consecutive days prior to the date of application (the date in which you submit your visa application online).
  5. Submit and pay for your visa application online within 31 days from the date of issue of bank statements or financial documents.

Account holder

You can prove you have enough money using:

  • your own money, or
  • your parent’s money – they must provide a letter confirming they agree to you using it this way, or
  • your partner’s money, if your partner is in the UK or applying at the same time

Using more than one account:

For combined financial evidence from two or more accounts, UKVI would normally consider these by taking the cumulative total across both accounts into consideration, provided the closing balance of both accounts falls within the require 31 days period up, until the date of application – and the funds in both/all accounts were held for the required 28 consecutive days

You cannot use:

  • overdrafts
  • cryptocurrency
  • stocks and shares
  • pensions
  • bank accounts that are not regulated by the financial regulatory body in the country in which the bank operates
  • bank accounts that do not use electronic record keeping
