What financial documents you can provide for educational loans

What you can provide if you have an educational loan to pay for your tuition fees and/or living costs.

Types of educational loans

An educational loan can be from:

  • a government department

  • an educational loans scheme (this could be through a bank or student loan company)

The loan funds must be available to you before you travel to the UK, unless your country’s government will pay the money directly to the University of Edinburgh, which will pay the loan to you.

Letter from the educational loan provider

You will need a letter from the institution providing the loan. The letter must be dated no more than 6 months before the date of your visa application and must contain all the following details:

  • date the letter was issued

  • confirmation that there are no conditions on the release of the loan other than a successful Student route visa application

  • amount of the loan

  • confirms that the loan is for you (your name must be mentioned)

  • must be on official stationery

  • confirms the funds will be available to you, or paid directly to the University, before you begin your programme

  • confirms the loan is a student loan provided by either the relevant government or a government sponsored-student loan company, or an academic or educational loans scheme

What to do if your loan does not cover all the fees and costs of living

You will need financial documents for any amount not covered by the educational loan. The required evidence depends on how you are funding this amount (if you are using your own money or if you have an official scholarship).
