Step 2: Complete and pay for your visa application online

After gathering your visa documents, complete your Student visa application form and pay all fees to submit it online.

1. Go to the Student visa GOV.UK website and click 'Apply online'. You will also find a summary of the required visa steps on the right of this web page.

2. Go to the 'Apply outside the UK' section and click the green button Start now

3. Click Scotland - where you're planning to live. Then click Continue

4. Click Yes or No depending on your passport. This has been selected as 'No' for a non-EU passport. Now click Continue

5. You need to type the first letter(s) of your country where you will apply from. appears for you to click from. you need to click the country name from the list that appears.

6. Once your country is selected, you can proceed further. You must make sure to answer the country correctly at this stage before completing the rest of the application form.

7. Click on the 'Find a visa application centre' GOV.UK webpage to check the list

8. On this page, you will be able to scroll down to your country where you will be applying from.

9. Click on your country to open the VFS website to see your nearest available locations for providing biometrics.

10. Once you're happy, return to your application, select 'I have identified the location' and click Next

11. Click Apply now (from outside the UK)

12. Type your email address and create a password. Click Save and continue

13. You should be using your own email address. Select answer as 'You'. Click Save and continue

14. You can provide a secondary email address if you wish. If not, select 'no' and click Save and continue

15. Provide your current telephone number. Click Save and continue

18. Only select 'Yes' if you have one of these listed financial scholarships. There will be questions later for all other types of finances/scholarships.

22. Enter your full name as it shows in your current passport. Click 'save and continue'

If you do not have both a first and surname shown in your passport, you need to click the hyperlinks to open a new text box. Clear all fields and re-enter your name(s) in 'enter your name(s)' new text box.

24. Enter all other known legal names. If no others, click Save and continue

25. Select your gender as shown in your current passport. Read the guidance, check the dropdown list and select your relationship status. Click Save and continue

26. Enter your current overseas address. If you can receive correspondence at this address, also select 'Yes'. Click Save and continue

30. If you don't hold a current national ID card, select 'No'. Click Save and continue

31. Type your country of nationality as shown in current passport and select from the list. Your passport bio photo page will confirm all of these details.

33. If you hold dual nationality or any other citizenship, you must declare this and include details. Click Save and continue

34. Only select 'Yes' if you have been granted a previous visa for the UK where you had to provide English Language evidence of B1 or above. Otherwise, select 'No'. Click Save and continue

36. Select 'No' if this doesn't apply to you. In rare cases, applicants may have studied previously in the UK. This relates to those that have a UK School English qualification only. Click Save and continue

37. The University of Edinburgh is a 'Higher Education Provider with a Track Record..of compliance' Select 'Yes'. *In rare cases, your CAS statement may confirm you as a 'gifted student'. If it does not, you must select 'No'. Click Save and continue

38. This question asks whether any of your family members are financially dependent on you (even if they are not travelling with you to the UK). Select the relevant answer and click Save and continue

43. Coming to study on a programme is not classed as an 'organised group' for visa purposes. This organised group question is of no relevance to your visa application. Select 'No' and click Save and continue

If you answer yes you will need to provide the details of one of your travel companions (even if you are travelling with more than one person). Otherwise, select no.

45. If you know where you will be living, provide your accommodation details here.
If you will staying in University owned accommodation but have not yet been allocated your room, use: Pollock Halls of Residence, 18 Holyrood Park Road, Edinburgh EH16 5AY

46. If you have a student/private accommodation confirmation, you should provide these details. Otherwise, provide your hotel/short term accommodation. If you don't know yet, answer No and confirm your accommodation intentions.

Check your answers and submit your visa application

When you are ready to submit your application, you'll need to pay all required fees. You will receive email confirmation of your submission. The visa application link will confirm your 'next steps' of what you need to do for your visa documents (and biometrics). Here, you will find your biometric deadline date in the 'next steps' section. You must remember to download your visa application form PDF and UKVI checklist. 

The standard wait time for a visa decision is usually 3/4 weeks. 

How to get a faster decision on your application  

You may be able to choose a priority visa service when submitting your visa application. 

Availability depends on your country and date of application. The UKVI priority service takes 5 working days, and the super-priority service takes 1/2 working days. These services carry extra fees and are never guaranteed, they could take longer.
