Tuition fee rates

Our policy explains what your annual tuition fees cover, when you have to pay, your responsibilities, and undergraduate tuition fee yearly increases.

What do annual tuition fees cover?

Annual tuition fees for your programme cover:

  • matriculation (registration)
  • tuition and/or supervision
  • one examination sitting
  • graduation in your final year of study

This also covers your membership of University unions, and access to other student facilities and amenities such as the library.

If you are a matriculated student who is not required to pay an annual programme or course fee, you should contact the Edinburgh University Students’ Association about associate membership.

Tuition fee status and how fee rates are determined

Your fee status determines how much you will pay in tuition fees. It is based on your nationality and where you are ‘ordinarily resident’.

Your fee status is not confirmed until after you apply for admission and is assessed based on the information provided in your application. We will then contact you should we require further information.

Once you start studying, your fee status applies for your entire programme and cannot be changed even if your circumstances change or the fee status criteria change. However, if you change to a different programme of study, we may reassess your fee status.

For undergraduate degrees, fee status is divided into the following categories:

  • Scotland Fee Rate consisting of:
    • Scotland Fee Rate
    • EU-EEA Pre/Settled Scotland Fee Rate
  • RUK Fee Rate consisting of:
    • England, Wales and Northern Ireland Fee Rate (RUK)
    • Republic of Ireland Fee Rate (ROI)
  • International Fee Rate consisting of:
    • EU-EEA Overseas Fee Rate
    • Overseas Fee Rate
  • Graduate Entry (Veterinary Medicine and LLB Ordinary)
    • applicants who already hold a degree level qualification

The tuition fees for your programme of study for your fee status are advertised on the degree finder entry for your programme and in the table of fees.

The international fee rate and graduate entry rates of fee are set at the discretion of the University. Individual universities set these fee rates independently.

The Scotland fee rate is set by the Scottish Government.

The RUK Fee Rate chargeable by Scottish institutions is subject to UK government limits: this ensures that students from the rest of the UK can study in Scotland at an annual fee rate that is no higher than the annual fee rate charged if studying in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.  The tuition fee amounts for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years have been confirmed.

Throughout this tuition fee policy, EU nationals assessed as international fee rate, particularly those joining a programme of study from 2021-22 session onwards, should refer to the international fee rate sections. Exceptions to this apply:

  • For Republic of Ireland (ROI) students, the section of this policy on RUK fee rate applies.
  • For non-ROI EU nationals assessed as pre-settled Scotland fee rate, or who joined their programme of study prior to 2021-22, the sections of this policy on Scotland fee rate applies.

Annual tuition fee increase

Our tuition fee rates increase every year in accordance with this policy. If you intend to study over more than one year, you should take this annual tuition fee rate increase into consideration.

We currently have exceptions to annual tuition fee rate increases in place for some fee status groups.

If you are assessed as international fee rate and are studying full-time over multiple years, an exception currently exists to the annual tuition fee increase.  This means:

  • you will not be affected by the annual tuition fee increase, and
  • you will be charged a fixed annual fee based on your start date

If you are given direct entry into Year 2 or Year 3, you will be charged the same annual rate as the year group that you join.

The annual tuition fee rate will increase for new entrants in each year.

For fees that increase annually, we review our tuition fee rates each year, with tuition fee rates for the next year of study being published around the start of Semester 1 in the year before students can enrol as new students. In reviewing what tuition fee rates should be for the next academic year, we look at factors including rates of inflation and costs to the University. The annual tuition fee rate will increase for new entrants in each year, and for continuing students unless exemptions apply.

Fee rates will increase by no higher than 5 percentage points more than the current or forecast Retail Price Index measure of inflation (whichever is higher) for continuing students. Where we change the structure of fees for a programme, the fee rate for a programme may increase by higher than this amount for new students.

Fee rate increases for Scotland Fee Rate and RUK Fee Rate

The Scotland Fee Rate and RUK rate of fee are subject to government limits. Your fees may increase each year, whether you are a continuing student or a new entrant in line with these government limits.

For RUK rate of fee, the UK Government has committed to:

  • increase undergraduate tuition fee caps in line with forecast inflation for academic years 2026-27 and 2027-28, and
  • pass legislation to automatically adjust tuition fee caps based on forecast inflation in future years

This means that if you are assessed as the RUK fee rate, your tuition fees will go up each year in line with inflation, so it is important to consider this when budgeting for your costs of study.

For tuition fee rate increases 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28, the UK Government has used the following measure of inflation: forecast RPIx (Retail Price Index All Items Excluding Mortgage Interest) for the first full quarter of the years falling in the academic year, as calculated by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

We have a reasonable expectation that this will continue to be the rate the UK Government will use for future adjustments. As such, RUK undergraduate students should expect their tuition fees to rise in line with this inflationary measure. However, the UK Government may change their approach to increasing tuition fees. We reserve the right to increase the tuition fee charged in line with the maximum cap applied by the UK Government.

When are tuition fees charged?

Tuition fee rates apply for a full academic session beginning 1 August to 31 July in the following year and are:

  • charged at the start of each year of study
  • due in full at the start of Semester 1

Whose responsibility is it to pay?

The payment of fees is your responsibility as a student. If you have a sponsor who fails to pay, you will be held personally liable for payment.

The tuition fee policy as it applies to self-funded students applies to the majority of students, including those whose fees are being paid by a sponsor. Where exceptions for specific sponsors or funders apply, these are detailed below.
