The Bristol Case has led many Universities to review its working practices and available information in relation to: the Equality Act; how we respond effectively to the needs of disabled students; what we define as competence standards and the reasonable adjustments we make to assessments. 

The Competence Standards and Reasonable Adjustments online course is a 30-minute course, which provides key information about the Bristol Case (Abrahart Case). All teaching staff and those who support teaching are expected to complete this course. Other staff members, even those who may not have as much direct interaction with students, are also strongly encouraged to complete the course.


It is expected that the course will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. There is a short knowledge check at the end of the course that is required for full completion.


The course has five main sections:

  2. Competence standards
  3. Reasonable adjustments
  4. Responding to the needs of disabled students
  5. Examples from University of Edinburgh

  1. From the Home page select Me, then click Learning
  2. Select What to learn or View Transcript - From the Actions button select the option Record External Learning Experience 
  3. Complete the fields within the Learning Item Details Section
