Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

The Biometric Residence Permit is an ID card on which the Student visa is printed for students coming to the UK for more than 6 months.

If a student’s visa application is successful they receive a decision letter confirming the details of their Student route visa, and vignette (visa sticker) in their passport. The vignette is valid for 30 days to allow the student to enter the UK when they arrive for their studies.

Once in the UK, students must collect a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) before the vignette expires, or within 10 days of arriving in the UK, whichever is later.

Students are encouraged to collect their BRP from the University, but can choose to collect it from a Post Office (option chosen during the application).

The Biometric Residence Permit is the student's visa and includes the student's:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • nationality
  • place of birth
  • length of visa
  • visa conditions

The University is required to keep a copy of the student’s BRP.  This is stored in the student's record (front and back) on Euclid.
