Medical Electives

Medicine or veterinary medicine students based in other countries can undertake elective attachments at Edinburgh Medical School teaching hospitals. It is very important that medical elective students secure the appropriate type of immigration permission in order to do their placement.

Standard visitor visa

Students wishing to undertake a medical elective programme at the University of Edinburgh will usually need to apply for permission to enter the UK under the Standard visitor route.

How to apply

The way in which students will apply for this type of immigration permission will depend on whether they are visa nationals or not.

Visa nationals

A list of visa nationals can be found at Appendix 2 of the link below

List of visa nationals

Students who are visa nationals will need to apply for and obtain a Standard visitor visa prior to travelling to the UK.

Non-visa nationals

Students whose nationality is not listed under the Appendix Visitor: Visa national list can request entry under Standard visitor visa student category when they arrive in the UK.

Documents needed from the University

Students applying under the Standard visitor route will need an offer letter from the University. This can be original or a pdf.

Travel via the Republic of Ireland

Non-visa nationals should ensure they do not travel via the Republic of Ireland – if they do so, they will not receive the correct permission to study in the UK.

If a student arrives via the UK without having obtained a visa before travelling, please refer them to the Student Immigration Service at the earliest time.

Travel via an e-Gate

Nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States do not normally need to meet with a Border Force agent, and will be able to enter the UK through e-gates. The e-gates will automatically grant the student permission to stay in the UK for up to 6 months.  Students using e-Gates should retain evidence of their date of entry to the UK, such as a boarding pass.
